Trumpeter/composer/arranger Kelly Pratt (Akoya Afrobeat Ensemble, The Silent League, Travis Sullivan’s Bjorkestra) assembled Microtonacity 3 years ago shortly after moving to New York City after meeting the musical like-minds of drummer Michael Fortune and bassist Ozi Augen. Shortly thereafter tenor saxophonist Bryan Murray was added to the mix, and following the departure of Ozi, bassist Matt Wigton. Originally playing primarily free-improvisations, the band quickly began incorporating more accessible types of music by adding creative arrangements of famous songs by The Doors, The Pixies, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Wonder, and many other popular artists into their sets. Aided with the use of electronics, Microtonacity has transformed these songs, as well as a large number of original compositions, into a truly unique sound. They released their debut record Negative Miles in 2004.

The members of Microtonacity have performed/recorded with such diverse musicians as Ray Charles, Louie Bellson, Maria Schneider, Tom Harrell, Anthony Braxton, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Marshall Allen, Sonny Simmons, and Butch Morris and have written and performed music for such festivals as The Montreal Jazz Festival, The JVC Jazz Festival, The Carnegie Hall Jazz Workshop, The Montreal Pop Festival, The New York International Fringe Festival, SXSW, IAJE, CMJ and many others. They have performed in such venues as Carnegie Hall, The Blue Note, The Knitting Factory, Tonic, and many others.
